Platja del Pebret is a sandy area in Peñíscola, in the heart of the Mediterranean, although you probably already know that. Its fine golden sand, clear waters, and status as an unspoiled beach are what set it apart from other beaches in the area. In addition, it is surrounded by a protected park, so you will be surrounded by a natural amphitheater of pine trees and scrubland.

Sound interesting? Keep reading, because we are going to tell you everything we know about it—which is quite a bit.

How to get to Platja del Pebret

Well, the first thing is to know how to get to Platja del Pebret and, don’t worry, there’s no complication, although the road has its adventurous side.

If you are coming from Peñíscola, take the road that goes into the Serra d’Irta Natural Park and continue south; after passing the silhouette of the Torre Badum—the great watchman of these cliffs—, the coastal track will take you straight to the Pebret and Russo beaches—another charming beach that is next door—. The last section is a compacted dirt track. You have to drive slowly and be aware of giving way when necessary; it is a bit narrow. And when you see a rehabilitated building, the old Corral del Batallón, you will be about to arrive.

And be careful, in summer there is fine print that you should take into account because the park regulates vehicle access to protect the environment. Normally, from mid-June to early September between 8:00 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., only cars and motorcycles with prior parking reservation in the designated areas can enter. You can do it electronically two or three days in advance, and the park also provides an information telephone number for questions: 964 33 67 90.

If you have not booked or do not feel like driving, you can always get there by walking or cycling along the coastal track, which is open to traffic.

What services and activities does Platja del Pebret offer?

Part of the magic of Pebret is that there are hardly any infrastructures around it. What will you find? A signposted car park and a picnic area with shade and sea views; there are also wooden walkways that protect the dunes and facilitate walking through the back of the beach.

What won’t you see? Showers, rows of sunbeds or beach bars with music. Come with water, food, an umbrella and, if you can, also bring some snorkel goggles to browse the rocky shallows at the ends of the beach. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom and the patches of sand that alternate with meadows and rock.

If you are looking for a coastal area with all the amenities, then take a look at the urban beaches of Peñíscola, and if you want to be between the sea and nature without any additives, then come to Platja del Pebret.

Next to it is the neighboring Platja del Russo, and between the two they form the most beloved duo of the Serra d’Irta. Of course, the latter has traditionally had a nudist atmosphere.

At the foot of the beach you will also find the Torre Badum—the one we mentioned before—. It is a 16th-century surveillance construction that dominates the second highest cliff in the Comunitat and also a natural viewpoint that you have to visit. It will take about 35 minutes walking from the beach.

And if you go to the Pebret barracks—Corral del Batallón—, you will find another piece of history: this building housed customs officers and civil guards who watched for smuggling by sea for decades, and today it has been rehabilitated as a point of public use. Wonderful, isn’t it?

Nature and protected environment

You are inside the Serra d’Irta Natural Park, declared as such in 2002 and considered one of the last unspoiled coastlines of the Valencian Community. What you see—pine forests, cliffs, coves—is not accidental; it is the result of conserving more than 7,700 hectares of forest and a protected maritime strip that keeps the coast intact.

And the dunes of Platja del Pebret are one of the most admired attractions of the park. Film plants such as the iris and sea spurge grow here, specialists in surviving salt, wind and drought.

If you look up towards the cliffs, the winged fauna will give you many joys, especially if you come with the idea of taking photos. Irta is in the middle of a migratory route and, in addition, maintains very special residents; over the sea it is possible to see seagulls, cormorants, Kentish plovers, peregrine falcons and eagles.

And in the clear waters of Pebret, posidonia meadows survive, authentic underwater forests that serve as nurseries for thousands of creatures. With goggles and a tube you will see octopuses and with luck and further in the background— some red starfish of the Mediterranean.

What you have to do is go up to the old town and get lost in its narrow streets until you reach the Peñíscola Castle. From its walls, the Mediterranean is seen and felt in a different way. And if it sounds familiar from series and movies, it is no coincidence, it is one of the most photogenic historical settings on the coast and has been the setting for “Game of Thrones” or “El Ministerio del Tiempo.”

Then you can go down to the Peñíscola promenade, a very long thread next to the sea that is a pleasure to walk along at dusk, either with an ice cream in hand or with the idea of stopping for a cocktail. Between one point and another, you will come across craft shops, viewpoints and lots of terraces.
