History and mission

The Parrot Garden was born with a dual mission: to protect and conserve exotic birds from different parts of the world and, at the same time, to teach in a close way the importance of respect for animals and their environment. Here you will learn how they live, how they communicate, and what each species needs to feel good.

Since its opening, it has become one of the most emblematic spaces to see in Peñíscola dedicated to sustainable tourism and environmental education. The park collaborates with breeding and conservation centers for endangered species, offering a safe home to many birds that could not survive in the wild.

So, if you’re still wondering, no, it’s not a zoo, here the animals live in a well-cared-for environment, with large spaces and flight zones where they can move freely. That’s why many consider it a tropical bird sanctuary.

How to get to the Parrot Garden-Animal Sanctuary of Peñíscola

The Parrot Garden is located on the outskirts of Peñíscola, less than 10 minutes from the historic center and a few steps from the sea. The exact address is Avenida Papa Luna, kilometer 56, in the heart of the municipality’s tourist area.

And getting there is very simple. If you come by car from the center of Peñíscola, you only have to follow the main avenue that borders the coast; the park is perfectly signposted and has free parking right at the entrance.

If you prefer to get there by public transport, in high season you can use the urban bus that runs the line between Peñíscola and Benicarló, there are several stops near the site. And if not, you can also do it by taxi or walking. That depends on you.

It is very close to the coast, so it can be an ideal visit before going to eat and spend the afternoon on the beach or before touring the old town and entering the Peñíscola Castle, one of the most impressive monuments in the Mediterranean.

Types of animals you will find here

Although the protagonists are the parrots and macaws, the Parrot Garden is home to a wide variety of species. You can see everything from small nymphs and Australian parakeets to large tropical birds such as yellow-crested cockatoos or ara ararauna, recognizable by their bright blue and gold tones.

In addition to the birds, the park has other animals that visitors love: turtles, koi fish, peacocks, rabbits, and a tropical butterfly area.

One of the most popular parts is the contact area, where you will be able to feed some birds and let them perch on your arms or shoulders. It is a safe, supervised, and very fun experience, especially if you come to visit the park with children.

There is also an area with shows and educational demonstrations, where the caretakers explain curiosities about the behavior of the birds and their way of communicating.

The entire site has shaded paths, gardens, and benches where you can rest while listening to the songs and squawks of the parrots.

Attractions and themed areas of the park

The Parrot Garden is not only a bird sanctuary, it is also a space designed to have fun with other activities. You can test your balance in Los Troncos, a route made with wood, or enter the Rainforest, a small jungle area where the vegetation and natural sounds will make you feel like you are in the jungle.

In Loro Aventura you can interact with the parrots, feed them, and let them perch on you, one of the most popular experiences in the park. And if you are traveling with children, the Adventure Fort and the Crazy Bridges are ideal for them. They are itineraries of walkways, obstacles, and suspension bridges in the middle of the vegetation.

And as areas to visit, you cannot miss the Wombaroo Rainbow Village, a village full of colors and decorative details, and the original Prison Break area, set as a prison.

Tickets and schedules

The Parrot Garden opens its doors all year round —except December 25 and January 1—. And the schedules may vary, but generally the park is open from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Tickets for the Parrot Garden can only be purchased directly at the ticket office and cost €22; if you also want to see lemurs, add €5 more.

And before setting foot inside the Parrot Garden, make sure you don’t have food on you —it’s forbidden— and no jewelry in sight either, you have to take it all off.

Curiosities about the Parrot Garden

The first thing we have to tell you is that the Parrot Garden is an exceptional space on the Costa del Azahar and the only one in Spain that combines interactive aviaries, free flight zones, and tropical botanical gardens so close to the sea.

It is literally a small tropical paradise in the heart of the Mediterranean coast and its name is no coincidence. The park is called «Parrot Garden» because, in the beginning, it had a small collection of parrots —parrots— donated by individuals. Over time, it grew to become a conservation space of reference in the east.

And be careful, because the caretakers say that many parrots are extremely sociable and have good memories. Some recognize the workers by their tone of voice and even imitate their phrases or greet them with sounds. If you visit it more than once, some may remember you and dedicate a much more affectionate “hello” to you.
