The most common way to get there is by car. From Tarragona, it is about 90 km—just over an hour—while from Zaragoza or Barcelona, the journey takes around two hours and fifteen minutes.
And if you want to fit it into a getaway along the Castellón coast, it is easy to combine with destinations like Benicàssim, Peñíscola, or Alcossebre. From any of these points, the drive takes no more than two hours, making it a perfect day trip.
If you are leaving from Benicàssim, the most direct route is via the AP-7 heading north until you connect with the C-12. From Peñíscola and Alcossebre, access is similar: follow the AP-7 toward Tarragona and then take the exit toward Mora d’Ebre to reach Miravet.
Once in the village, you can leave your car at the bottom and walk up to the castle—about a 15-minute uphill climb—or drive to the parking lot located next to the entrance.
A Brief Note on the History of Miravet Castle
Opinions on the history of Miravet Castle vary, but it originated in the Al-Andalus period, when it was built as a defensive fortress over the Ebro River. In the 12th century, it passed into the hands of the Knights Templar, who transformed it into one of the most important Templar constructions on the peninsula.
The Templars reinforced the walls, built new towers, and shaped the complex we know today. The castle was a military and religious center, as well as a key point for controlling navigation on the Ebro and the lands of the Ribera region.
After the order was dissolved, the castle passed to the Order of Saint John and later played a prominent role in various conflicts such as the War of the Spanish Succession and the Spanish Civil War, where it once again became a battlefield.
What to See Inside the Castle
The tour begins at the outer walls, which show you the defensive scale of the fortress and offer incredible views of the Ebro River.
Inside, the most striking feature is the parade ground, a large open space that served as the center of military life. Arranged around it are the various rooms: the Romanesque church, the old stables, and the rooms used by the Templars as warehouses or dormitories.
Another interesting point is the keep, from which the entire surrounding area was monitored. Climbing to the top offers a spectacular panoramic view of the Ebro and the fields surrounding Miravet.
It is also worth noticing the cisterns, passages, and more everyday corners of the castle. It wasn’t all about war; people also lived, prayed, stored provisions, and organized long workdays here.

Miravet Castle is part of the network of sites managed by the Generalitat de Catalunya, and admission is very affordable.
The general price is €5 per person, with a reduced rate of €3 for students, retirees, and groups. Children under 8 enter for free. Additionally, there are open-house days on specific dates, such as the first week of May.
Tickets for Miravet Castle can be purchased at the ticket office. And yes, the castle is open all year round with these hours:
- From October to May: 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
- From June to September: 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM.
Keep in mind that it is closed on Mondays, except for public holidays.
