Its medieval relics, such as the Portal Fosc, or its secluded beaches and coves, are the best example of this. Without a doubt, a visit to this town can be the starting point for your best vacation. To prove it to you, in this article we will explain what to see in Peñíscola.

Plan your Next Vacation: 6 Sites to See in Peñíscola

If your intention is to spend a few days in Peñíscola to disconnect, our advice is to do it between the months of April and September, which is when the weather is better. This town is an ideal destination to spend time with family or plan a getaway with friends. We show you what to visit in Peñíscola so you don’t miss anything.

1. El Bufador

The symbiosis between the natural and human environment of this town is impressive. The result of this combination is reflected in unique spaces in the middle of its cobbled streets, as is the case with El Bufador. This natural hole between rocks leads directly to the sea and allows you to hear the roar of the waves.

This simple enclave is, paradoxically, one of the town’s main attractions. The noise that can be perceived is unique, as affirmed by those who have visited this town.

2. Portal Fosc

In ancient times, Peñíscola was a medieval city surrounded by a wall to defend itself from constant invasions. Today, relics of an era in which knights and Templars were part of society are still preserved. The most important is the Portal Fosc, which served as the main entrance to the town.

It was erected in the 16th century and, as a curiosity, was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones. In Spanish, it means Dark Portal, and its meaning is easily reflected from the moment we cross it. This gives access to a gallery in which light is conspicuous by its absence, leading to the Guard Corps.

3. Old Town

If you want to know the most recent past of this town, we recommend you stroll through its old town. Start on Calle San Roque, one of the most admired by tourists and inhabitants of Peñíscola. Its special contrast between white facades and colorful gardens is worth admiring.

What people like most are its cobbled streets that lead to a network of old roads where you can indulge in getting lost. Let yourself be carried away by its special landscapes and take the opportunity to take photos.

4. North and South Beaches

When you contemplate a panoramic view of the town, the most recognizable thing is its rock, on which numerous houses are located. This divides the coast of Peñíscola in two, with beaches that are called North and South. Each one has an admirable beauty, but they are radically opposite to each other (despite being timidly separated).

The North beach is the largest, with 5 kilometers in length, the most visited and has multiple leisure services and water activities. You can even go paddle surfing or diving if you want to live new experiences. For its part, the South beach measures only 300 meters and is very quiet. One of the best things to see in Peñíscola if you want to relax.

5. Papa Luna Castle

Also known as Peñíscola Castle, it was built by the Templars in the 14th century. Until then, this fortress was used by the Arabs during al-Ándalus, although it was converted to house the dependencies of Papa Luna. His real name was Benedict XIII, and he decided to settle here in a time of instability in Christianity.

Today, you can visit all its rooms to learn about what papal life was like in the Middle Ages. Without a doubt, a great opportunity to contemplate closely the predominant role that the church had in the society of the time. Don’t leave without touring its Gothic Hall or the Parade Ground, which remain almost intact after more than 700 years.

6. Sierra De Irta

The Sierra de Irta is one of those places that account for the special nature of this town. It is located just to the south and acts as a natural border, although it keeps a secret that tourists often leave behind. Its coves are the main attraction, but you will have to search well, as they are very hidden.

Our advice is to plan a hiking excursion along some of its routes. The PR.V-194 trail extends for 26 kilometers and is one of the most popular.

Having reached this point, we hope to have helped you with what to see in Peñíscola. This town will be the ideal place to organize a vacation that you will never forget, especially if you plan it in company. Would you like to enjoy the charms of this town?
