And that\u2019s thanks to the medieval Pe\u00f1\u00edscola Castle and, above all, its incredible stretches of sand\u2014which is exactly what we\u2019re here to talk to you about today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We\u2019re going to list the best coves in Pe\u00f1\u00edscola and tell you what they\u2019re like in great detail so you can choose yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The five best coves in Pe\u00f1\u00edscola<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you head out, you should know that almost none of these coves have services\u2014no lifeguard, no beach bar, no shade\u2014so bring everything you need for the day. We\u2019re talking water, sunscreen and, above all, water shoes, because the seabed in many of them is pebbles or small rocks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#1 Cala del Moro<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Cala del Moro is a tiny, pocket-sized stretch of beach\u2014about 40 meters long and 10 wide\u2014with extremely clear water and pebbles on the bottom.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the best part is you don\u2019t need to overthink how to get there: it\u2019s just a few minutes by car from the center, with a small parking area\u2014unattended, though\u2014right next to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has a cleaning service, but note: <strong>there\u2019s no lifeguard<\/strong>, so swimming is at your own risk. Another point in its favor? From the water you get one of the prettiest postcard views of Pe\u00f1\u00edscola, with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/en\/peniscola-castle\/\">Papa Luna Castle<\/a> right behind you.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1360\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/cala-del-moro-peniscola-1360x630.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6393\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#2 Cala Puerto Negro<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/en\/natural-park-sierra-irta\/\">Sierra de Irta<\/a> road a bit further south and, in just 15 minutes, you\u2019ll reach Puerto Negro, another member of the list of best coves in Pe\u00f1\u00edscola. <strong>Rocks, grey pebbles, and vegetation that grows almost down to the water\u2019s edge.<\/strong> Here you really will feel like you\u2019re far from everything&#8230; even if you\u2019re not actually that far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s tiny\u2014barely 230 meters long\u2014but with an <strong>intense blue water<\/strong> you only see in little-visited coves like this. It\u2019s also the locals\u2019 favorite for nudism. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1360\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/cala-puerto-negro-1360x630.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6396\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#3 Cala Puerto Azul<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stone\u2019s throw from Cala del Moro\u2014literally, because they\u2019re only separated by a small rocky outcrop\u2014is Puerto Azul. Here you won\u2019t step on a single grain of sand: <strong>the cove is all pebbles and about 30 meters long<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small, yes, but full of charm\u2014especially if you like getting sun pretty much all day. <strong>And here\u2019s a key detail: Puerto Azul is one of the few coves in the area\u2014<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/en\/the-best-dog-friendly-beaches-in-castellon\/\"><strong>there are more dog-friendly beaches in Pe\u00f1\u00edscola<\/strong><\/a> <strong>\u2014where you can bring your furry friend.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1207\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/cala-puerto-azul-peniscola-1207x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6437\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#4 Cala l&#8217;Aljub<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can <strong>only reach Cala l&#8217;Aljub on foot or by bike<\/strong>, so when you finally get there, it feels like you\u2019ve truly earned the privilege of being here. What makes it special? <strong>Beautiful blue-green water, sand mixed with rock, and Mediterranean vegetation framing the cove on all sides<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Our advice? Take advantage of a hiking or cycling route through the Sierra de Irta and stop here halfway for a dip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1360\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/lAljub-cala-peniscola-1360x630.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6440\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">#5 Cala Argilaga<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We wrap up the list with the cove farthest from the center: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/en\/cala-argilaga\/\">Argilaga<\/a>, almost on the edge of the Alcossebre area. And yes, the journey is a bit longer, but it\u2019s absolutely worth getting to know it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here you\u2019ll find caves, rocky formations, and enviably clear water.<\/strong> You can play explorer among the grottoes or simply use them to shelter from the sun. The shoreline is sand and gravel in whitish tones, and here there are basic services\u2014signage, supervision, and cleaning\u2014as well as a small parking area by the road. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1191\" height=\"630\" src=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Cala-Argilaga-1191x630.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6443\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other coves you can also explore<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the five coves in Pe\u00f1\u00edscola above aren\u2019t enough for you, the Sierra de Irta still hides a few more that are smaller and less well-known:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Cala Ord\u00ed<\/strong>: it\u2019s between Puerto Azul and l&#8217;Aljub. It\u2019s very narrow\u2014about 50 meters long and 10 wide\u2014and made up of gravel and pebbles. To get down to it, you\u2019ll have to navigate around some rocks. The good part? The water is very clear, great for snorkeling.    <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cala del Volante<\/strong>: it\u2019s next to l&#8217;Aljub and is about 32 meters long, with a seabed that\u2019s practically all pebbles. Unlike other small coves in the area, it does have signage, supervision, and a cleaning service. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cala Cubanita<\/strong>: a very small, natural little cove, located next to the Irta Lighthouse and Font de la Parra, practically right by Cala Argilaga. No services. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cala Badum<\/strong>: it\u2019s next to the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.orangecosta.com\/blog\/en\/torre-badum\/\">Torre Badum<\/a>, a medieval watchtower that crowns the cliff. It\u2019s about 35 meters long and access is one of the most difficult on the whole list, which makes it one of the most solitary and quiet. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And if you\u2019re looking for something with space to lay out your towel and with comforts without leaving this area, keep in mind that next to these coves you\u2019ll also find larger beaches like Playa de las Viudas, Santa Luc\u00eda, el Russo, or la Basseta\u2014technically classified as beaches and not coves\u2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get around the coves in Pe\u00f1\u00edscola and what to keep in mind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All these coves are along the same road that runs alongside the Sierra de Irta Natural Park, signposted from the south of Pe\u00f1\u00edscola. The farther you get from town, the more solitary and unspoiled the coast becomes\u2014but you\u2019ll also find fewer services. So if you\u2019re planning to spend the day out, bring everything you need: water, food, an umbrella, and suitable footwear for the water\u2014don\u2019t forget your water shoes!\u2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And note that <strong>Cala Argilaga, Cala Cubanita, and Cala Badum are already within the Sierra de Irta Natural Park, and for several summers now the Generalitat Valenciana has restricted vehicle access<\/strong> to the park\u2019s coastal track during the summer season\u2014approximately from June to September, between 8:00 and 19:30.
